It was founded in 25 b. c. by emperor Augusto. It went down from the maximum political and social splendour to an absolute decline throughout the centuries.

In 1983 it was declared Mankind heritage. Nowadays Mérida is a thriving town since it is the capital town in Extremadura.

Roman ruins can be found everywhere in Mérida as witness of its history.

The Roman theatre is still used for its original purpose and the Classical Theatre Festival has taken place there since 1933.
The Roman Art National Museum is a centre for the spread of the Roman Culture. Similarly here group discussions, conferences and other both national and international cultural activities take place.
